When it comes to climate change, the time for action is now. In a newly released study, UK and Netherlands scientists warn if the world’s major governments don’t enact measures that limit global warming, it may be impossible to stop its progress. They claim “we will cross a point of no return in 2035” – beyond which, the chance of stemming Earth’s temperature from rising by 2º Celsius or 3.6º Fahrenheit and setting off a perilous mix of global calamities will be extremely unlikely.
Here in the United States, the leader of the free world seems to say we have no reason to fear. President Trump now says he no longer believes Climate Change is a hoax as he’s tweeted in the past – as in December 2013 when he posted, “We should be focused on magnificently clean and healthy air and not distracted by the expensive hoax that is global warming!”
During a 60 Minutes interview aired October 15, he told correspondent Lesley Stahl, “Look, I think something’s happening. Something’s changing and it’ll change back again. I don’t think it’s a hoax, I think there’s probably a difference. But I don’t know that it’s manmade. I will say this,” He added, “I don’t wanna give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t wanna lose millions and millions of jobs. I don’t wanna be put at a disadvantage.”
When Stahl suggested evidence of huge chunks of ice in Greenland falling off into the ocean, raising sea levels, the President responded, “You don’t know whether or not that would have happened with or without man. You don’t know.”
Trying to emphasize he was not denying it the President said, “I’m not denying climate change, but it could very well go back. You know, we’re talkin’ about over a millions of years. They say that we had hurricanes that were far worse than what we just had with Michael.”
She asked about all the scientists who say that climate change is worse than ever, he answered, “You’d have to show me the scientists, because they have a very big political agenda, Lesley.”
President Trump seems to confound the issue with politics and money when he explains, “I don’t wanna to give trillions and trillions of dollars. I don’t want to lose millions and millions of jobs. I don’t want to be put at a disadvantage.” In 2012 he had tweeted, “We can’t destroy the competitiveness of our factories in order to prepare for nonexistent global warming. China is thrilled with us!” The next day he continued with, “The concept of global warming was created by and for the Chinese in order to make U.S. manufacturing non-competitive.” The following year he was still holding to that line with a tweet, “China loved Obama’s climate change speech yesterday. They laughed! It hastens their takeover of us as the leading world economy.”
On the issue of climate change the leader of the free world seems very confused and conflicted. Scientists are warning if the world’s major governments don’t enact measures that limit global warming, it may be impossible to stop its progress. Yet, we have a president, who may well be in office until 2024, believing that climate change, “…could very well go back. You know, we’re talkin’ about over a millions of years.”
All the while, the environmental clock is still ticking. The question is how our grandchildren and future generations will look back on this time?
